Over the last few years, I have read several books on health-related subjects. On more than one occasion, I read about the effects of the news media on our lives. A few months ago I decided to stop watching TV for 30 days. I wanted to see what effect it had on my life.
I used to be an avid TV watcher. On average watching 3 – 4 hours of TV a night. My favorite shows were 24 and Prison Break. I also watched the news at least twice a day. I thought after a few days that I would miss it. There were a few times I caught myself picking up the remote out of habit, but Instead of turning on the TV, I used it to turn on the radio.
People asked me, "How do you keep up with what’s going on in the world?" My response was, "I really don’t need to know". What I realized was that we are the ones encouraging the news services and newspapers to write about all the negativity in the world. If we watch it, we are asking for it.
The 30 days flew by and the only thing I missed about TV was sports. The time I used to spend hypnotized by the TV, I now spend playing with my son, listening to music or working on the Internet. I began to feel better and realized that we don’t miss negativity , only positive things. The sporting events I like to watch are not negative. I watch a little TV now and then, but I shy away from the news and high tension/ drama shows. Try giving up the TV for a week or two and see how you feel. I bet you will be a happier person!

1Your great post reminds me of a great quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes. He said, “I would not give a fig for the simplicity this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.”
Thanks for the great post!

3I have also given up watching TV or listening to the news. I have found that since doing this my life is so much more relaxed as I no longer take on the problems of the world. If there is something I need to know about, the information will eventually find its way to me. Just by giving up one hour of TV a day you will gain 365 hours which is a full 15 days a year! That is a lot of extra time that can be used to spend with your children, do some exercise, work on your personal development etc. Time is precious – we should all make the most of it.

4I was thinking the same about our newspaper subscription – my wife got it, ostensibly to keep in touch with our local area. There’s SO much negativity that I wonder what it is we’re keeping in touch with. I know that the world’s not so awful since all the good being done rarely gets reported and certainly isn’t sensational. So I kinda wish we’d ditch the paper too.
Last December I convinced my wife to get rid of our satellite tv signal. Ever since we had gotten the DVR action, we’d stopped flipping through channels and only watched specific things – for me, it was mostly documentaries. For her, it was reruns of shows. So we got rid of the satellite subscription, and had no antenna either. 8 months later, I watch about 2-4 hours a week, between movies and documentaries, all of which are readily available from the library system. I love that I get irritated now when I can’t find a good book to read in the house.
btw – I used to be a sports guy, but the more I thought about it, the less I liked it. I’d rather play a sport for fun than watch a bunch of overpaid, overhyped and way over-adulated people. How would things change if people took all the money they spend on buying jerseys and game tickets and used it for personal growth? (reading, hobbies, personal interests, etc) I used to care about who won or who lost and frankly, I don’t know why.
