I started experimenting with making smoothies a year ago. They are refreshing healthy treats. There are several different ingredients that you could use to make a smoothie. The “ultra healthy, all natural berry smoothie” is a concoction that I brewed up. It is my favorite and I drink them all the time. I hope you enjoy it!
Ingredients: (makes 5 cups for 2 - 3 smoothies)
- (1 10oz bag) of frozen mixed organic berries. I use Whole Foods 365 organic berry blend. A bag of berry mix includes strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. I use frozen berries because they are easier to store and when blended add that slushy texture to the smoothie. Berries contain tons of antioxidants and are very good for your body.
- (2 cups) of Naked Mighty Mango smoothie mix. Some of the Naked drinks are already called smoothies. I use them in replace of traditional juice or water. They add tons of nutrients to your mix. Read my review on Naked juice drinks.
- (1-2) organic bananas. Bananas are rich in vitamin B6 and they are also a good source of fiber, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.
- (1 1/2 cups) of raw walnuts. Walnuts are good for you in so many ways. They contain higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids as compared to other nuts. They also are packed with fiber, vitamins B & E and antioxidants. I buy natural walnuts instead of organic. They cost less, and their hard shell blocks the majority of the harmful pesticides. This goes for all hard shelled nuts. I usually buy a weeks supply at one time. Nuts go bad (rancid) if they are not consumed within 3 - 5 days while stored in a plastic bag. You can keep them in the refrigerator or air tight container, and they will last longer.
- (2 tablespoons) of organic flax seed oil. Some call flax seed a modern miracle food. It has high concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids like found in salmon. It is also accredited to lowering cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. I buy Whole Foods 365 organic unrefined, cold pressed flax seed oil. It tastes like olive oil.
- (1 inch) chunk of raw ginger root. In Eastern societies, ginger is known for its healing powers. Ginger stimulates digestion and helps lower inflammation in the body. It strengthens your immune system and alleviates stress. Studies show ginger can help with nausea and motion sickness. I plan on testing this out the next time I go deep sea fishing. I usually only buy a week or two supply since it will dry out.
- (1 tablespoon) of raw local honey. I use RAW local honey for several reasons. The heating and filtering of honey removes all the pollen. Eating local pollen will help you with seasonal allergies. This works in the same way yearly flu shots do. Research has shown that raw honey is beneficial for ulcers, digestion, improving immune system and a host of other things. We could survive off of bee honey alone.
Optional:
- Use fresh berries instead of frozen.
- Use other organic juices.
- Add one small container of organic yogurt.
Please let me know how you like it!
